Marking questions
Ten useful distinctions
These answers explain the boundaries of common claims. Follow the relevant guide and authoritative sources before making a purchasing or workplace decision.
Does a standard number prove independent certification?
No. A reference identifies a standard, not necessarily a third-party certification process. Check the applicable conformity route and evidence for the exact product. A manufacturer’s statement, test report and third-party certificate have different roles.
Is CE a universal quality award?
No. CE marking is part of the applicable EU product conformity framework. It is not a general quality award or a guarantee of suitability for every workplace. Read the declaration of conformity, instructions and relevant assessment evidence together.
Can US and European ratings be directly substituted?
Not automatically. Methods, classifications and legal acceptance differ. Compare the underlying requirements and applicable workplace duties. For examples, see NRR and SNR and glove cut classifications.
Must UK equipment always have UKCA rather than CE?
Do not use a blanket rule. Great Britain and Northern Ireland have different arrangements, and accepted routes can change. Check current UK government guidance for the product and destination.
Does an older edition mean equipment is unsafe?
Not by itself. Check applicable requirements, transition arrangements, instructions, condition and the hazard. A newer publication alone does not determine the status of every existing item. Publication, legal referencing and withdrawal can follow different schedules.
Is a test report the same as a certificate?
No. A test report records defined testing. Certification is an attestation within a specified scheme and scope. Verify model coverage and any ongoing conditions. Neither document should be accepted solely because it carries an impressive logo.
Does N95 mean protection against gases?
No. N95 is a particulate respirator classification under the US NIOSH approval framework. It does not establish gas, vapour or oxygen-deficiency protection. See Respirator evidence for selection and approval checks.
Can I add two hearing protector ratings?
No. Plug and earmuff ratings cannot simply be added. Use an appropriate recognized assessment method or suitable combined-performance data. Fit and consistent wearing remain essential.
Does a high cut rating prove chemical resistance?
No. Mechanical and chemical protection are different properties. Chemical selection needs substance-specific data for the exact glove and conditions. A material name or mechanical pictogram is not enough.
Can this site approve a product or workplace choice?
No. This site explains references and evidence questions. It does not certify products, authenticate individual items or replace competent workplace assessment. Use the clarification composer for editorial questions, not urgent safety decisions.
